Founded by Lorelei Bayne in Sacramento in 2011, this event is modeled after New York City’s, Symphony Space Dance Sampler, with the goal of bringing together acclaimed professional area dance companies under one roof, for a gala weekend of dance!
The mission of the Dance Sampler is to foster campus and community growth by showcasing emerging and established professional artists and to expose audiences to the growing variety of dance in our region.
This year we are presenting programs that are “unplugged,” meaning the technical and production aspects of these concerts are stripped down to basics, offering a distinctive perspective on the art of dance. We are thrilled to be showcasing diverse artists from Davis, San Francisco and the Sacramento area, during this exciting short run, and are delighted to be your destination for cutting edge, live dance performance. A special thank you goes to our Stage Manager for this event, Drew Lenox.
sjDANCEco, a year-round contemporary dance company based in San Jose, California, will soon present its ChoreoProject Awards on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 at 2:30 and 7 pm at the San Jose State University Dance Theatre.
Now in its 12th year, sjDANCEco’s ChoreoProject Awards Concert is a low-tech dance series for all dance disciplines, from modern to ballet to hip-hop to jazz to ethnic dance. It’s designed to provide emerging and professional choreographers a cost-free opportunity to present their work.
To be accepted, choreographers must first audition their work. Those selected perform in the concert for an opportunity to receive one of two awards presented – The sjDANCEco Award (selected by the Artistic Directors) and The Audience Choice Award (selected by audience ballot vote.) The awards include a cash prize and an invitation to perform during the professional hour of the sjDANCEco Festival at Santana Row during National Dance Week in April. Participants are selected about 8 weeks prior to the ChoreoProject Awards performances.
The spring 2017 ChoreoProject artists include: Michelle Alias from Napa with Loops; Diego Campos from Sacramento with Sketch for Two Sentences/Semblanza para do oranciones; Erwin Columbus from Sunnyvale with Cognitive Dissonance; Danielle Galvez from Union City with Prayer; and Nhan Ho from Sacramento with a yet-to-be-titled work.
The remaining artists are Malia Jones from Elk Grove with Woven; Elisabeth Kindler-Abali from Berkeley with Butterfly; Lindsey McLevis from San Jose with Burn My Shadow; and Annie Rosenthal Parr from Mill Valley with Shadow/Land.

sjDANCEco is a year-round contemporary dance company based in San Jose, California that produces world premiere dances by its core and guest choreographers, and presents the very best of Contemporary and Classic Modern Dance as well as Masterpieces of the American Modern Dance Repertory. In addition to a full season of dance concerts, each Spring sjDANCEco produces a free outdoor Dance Festival at Santana Row in celebration of National Dance Week. Twice a year, sjDANCEco’s ChoreoProject offers emerging and professional choreographers in all dance disciplines (modern, ballet, hip hop, jazz, ethnic dance, etc.) a cost-free opportunity to present their work.
In 2016, Nhan Ho Project relocated to Sacramento, California premiering its works throughout Northern California. We had the pleasure of performing at sjDANCEco’s ChoreoProject Awards, Sacramento’s Dance Sampler, Sacramento’s Hatch Series, Prelude Sacramento 2016, their own production “Stream of Consciousness 2016,” and a collaboration with TwoPoint4 Dance Theater’s “IMPRINTS.” We were also honored to receive the “sjDANCEco Award” for performance and choreography in March 2016. We are excited to venture into our new season of 2017 and are looking for strong male and female contemporary-modern dance artists to join us.
This coming year, we are looking to host our first annual evening-length performance in October (dates and location TBA). Company dancers will be working on old and new repertories. Along with the annual concert, the company will continue to teach master classes and workshops, perform at different venues and festivals, and do outreach programs with local high schools and dance programs.
On Monday, November 14, 2016, Nhan Ho Project will be holding its audition at Step I Dance & Fitness (1920 T. Street, Sacramento, CA 95814) from 9-11pm. Dancers must be 18+ to audition. Please bring a copy of your Headshot, Danceshot, and Resume to the audition. Dancers should arrive 15 minutes early to register and warm up their bodies prior to the audition. Kneepads are highly recommended but not required for high velocity vocabulary movements.
The 2017 season runs from January through October. Dancers must be available on Mondays 9-11pm for rehearsal and committed to the full season to be considered. We look forward in welcoming new members into our NHP family. Please spread the words to those who are interested. See YOU there!
IMPRINTS is the first collaboration between Nhan Ho Project and TwoPoint4 Dance Theater. In this unique and intimate evening, you will witness professional dance companies present works that resonate with the community. Through these pieces, each company hopes to raise awareness for dance arts and leave an emotional attachment. We hope by bringing these artists together for this special performance, you too will share the experience.

Like a progressive dinner, this unique dance program will serve each dance course up within a different environment at the Museum. Developed by Lorelei Bayne, vice chair and dance coordinator in the department of theater and dance at Sacramento State, HATCH presents a variety of original performances by both established and emerging choreographers. This year’s program will feature works inspired by the exhibition Andy Warhol: Portraits.
